Mite Control
Pestec specializes in pest control using integrated pest management (IPM) methods. We are Green Shield Certified and EcoWise Certified IPM providers. Pestec can develop pest management plans for biting insects including: tropical rat and bird mites, fleas, and many other pests.
Tropical Rat Mite
*Eggs are typically laid in the rat's nesting material but not on the rat itself.
*Larvae have 6 legs and will take about 24 days to emerge as 8 legged protonymphs.
*Adults will readily feed on humans even when rat numbers are abundant.
*These mites typically feed at night or in semidarkness and will retreat to cracks and crevices between meals.
*Adults and nymphs will seek out warm places to hide such as hot water pipes, stoves and walls.
*Mites may live as long as 63 days without a meal.
Bird Mite
*Bird mites have the same life cycle as other the Tropical rat mite.
*Unlike the Tropical rat mite, bird mites normally live on their hosts and will leave them when they die in search of a new host. This can result in an increase in human attacks.
*The chicken mite is most common in rural areas while the northern fowl mite is associated with canaries, pigeons, and other birds.
Tropical rat mite and Bird mite control
*Poor sanitation allows debris (dust, hair, fur) to collect in cracks, crevices and other protected places where mites can flourish.
*Current or abandoned bird nests allow harborage for bird mites.
*Clutter can provide extra habitat for mites and make it hard to carry out good sanitation.
*Physical controls employ physical means to remove or kill mites.
*Remove any bird nests around the structure.
*Close any gaps or holes that may allow rodent access to structure.
*Daily vacuuming may be necessary in times of infestations.
*Steam cleaning will usually kill larvae.
*Regular laundering of linens, clothing and pet bedding will kill eggs and larvae.
